It’s Peopley Out There

 In Mindfulness and Meditation

“Laughter is an instant vacation.” ~ Milton Berle

Summertime is here, Covid restrictions are lifting and we are shifting back to being more social. Outside of the Zoom call, more social that is.

I don’t know about you, but all this time with the same folks in my bubble and now slowly incorporating activities and meetups outside of the 4 walls I’ve known as home base for many months has me reflecting. “Peopling”, yes I totally made up that word, the act of engaging with people in a face to face manner, feels a bit strange to me. Like somehow I unlearned to “people” in all that time when “peopling” wasn’t an option. It’s that awkward first day at a new school, and while I know the people it feels vaguely familiar and yet still not in easy rhythm yet.

What I have noticed though is that in reconnecting and learning to “people” again the conversations feel deeper and the laughs are more spontaneous. You know the laugh out loud, and laugh some more until you can’t breathe and tears are rolling down your face laughs. That feels really good. My cheeks hurt and I may even develop abs! And right away the freeness of laughter connects me back to summer as a kid. Maybe it’s because the “peopling” is happening outside. Whatever the reason, the connection to childhood is a sign for me to stop taking life so seriously. To throw all awkwardness and just be that cool goofy kid who laughs freely and easily.

Is there any better feeling in the world than catching your breath after a good belly laugh? Or hearing the sound of someone else in fits of laughter? You can’t not laugh when someone around you is laughing hysterically, even if you don’t know what they were originally laughing at. And sometimes in those moments where you “catch” the laugh, you get the bonus laugh. You know when you both stop laughing and then look at each other and burst out laughing for round 2.

Ah and that’s the gift. Through laughter comes freedom, lightness and the true essence of summer. Reconnect to your lighter side with this laughter meditation.
