What Are You Looking At?

 In Mindfulness and Meditation

“Smile in the mirror. Do that every day and you’ll start to see a big difference in your life” – Yoko Ono

What do you see when you look in the mirror?

Chances are you have conditioned yourself to look in the mirror to look for imperfections. One of the collateral beauties to come from Covid for me is that I spend less time in front of the mirror. No need to get made up for a commute to sit in a bad lighting environment. Perhaps it’s even too little looking in the mirror now. So much so that the other day, probably 4 pm, I checked my reflection while washing my hands to realize I had a huge chunk of toothpaste in my hair. Hard, crusty, toothpaste. There, in my hair, all day, in all the video calls, since probably 7:30 that morning. Previous reactions may have been shame or OMG I am so embarrassed but instead I burst out laughing. It was comical. And then I started coming up with funny jokes, at least I thought they were “fresh”…. see what I did there?

Jokes aside, I’ve started to use the mirror as my friend. I try to smile at the reflection, see the wrinkles as vintage wisdom. Mel Robbins talks about the morning high 5 in the mirror. Yup just like it sounds. Start your day with a great big high 5 to yourself while looking in the mirror. Then throw in Yoko Ono’s advice and smile. Really look in your eyes and smile. It’s awkward at first, like a new relationship but I guarantee it, keep it up and you will shift how you view looking at yourself in the mirror. (tee hee another pun).

Puns aside, slip into this week’s meditation and see how you radiate. Finding your truth is always a beautiful discovery.
