Just Drop It!

I love decluttering for when it’s done, the added physical clarity and order bring such joy and lightness. The motivation to throw things out though, must come from inside, not from an external need. For me that comes from deep cleaning internally first, then my physical surroundings simply have to follow suit. There are many ways to spring clean inside one of which is asking yourself: “What am I choosing to let go of that I don’t need anymore?”

After we have discussed last week how we need to restore our energy with what’s been going on in the last 12+ months I want to point at another opportunity this time is gifting us with. This period of time comes with many changes and insecurities. Both can be uncomfortable and hard to navigate, especially when you have a strong need to control.

The brilliant thing is we all can choose for ourselves. We can maintain control and therefore stay in the discomfort and frustration. Or we can start to harness the chance for change and drop it. Why not start by asking yourself: “What will it take for me to let go of the need to be in control of everything?” We can even use our creativity to consciously plan to loose control; could be interesting and fun!

My current answer correlates with a wonderful quote from Corrie ten Boom, a Dutch writer who together with her family saved many Jews from the Holocaust by hiding them in their home: “Worrying is carrying tomorrow’s load with today’s strength – carrying two days at once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. Worrying doesn’t empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.” Each day has its own problems as well as its own strength to handle them, why waste my energy on something that didn’t even yet come into existence? I rather want to learn to stay in the present and enjoy what is.
