A Few of My Favourite Things
Flowers are one of my favourite things. They are an exquisite piece of nature, perfect in every shape and form. They bring me pure joy. As often as I can, I will buy myself a bouquet of flowers for my kitchen table, they add colour and beautiful fragrance. They make me feel happy and uplifted. My daughter Bella and I share the same love for nature. We look forward to having our yard filled with flowers every summer. She loves to come shopping with me to help pick them out. They brighten our front and backyard. They are a resting place for the honey bees and hummingbirds to feed, and they attract butterflies – all of which we are very fond. She loves to pick wildflower bouquets for us to enjoy inside. Even when we are camping, we often have an empty bottle filled with flowers for our outdoor table.
If I had to choose just one kind, which is a very hard decision for me since I love all flowers, I would have to say my favourite is lilacs.
Every spring in our valley, the lilacs come into bloom. Locally, there are three different shades of lilacs. White, dark purple and light purple. My favourite is the light purple. The aroma is pleasant and sweet. I love everything about them. The colour, the scent, the shape of each individual blossom. I love how they grow in a cluster similar to a bunch of grapes. My Grandma has a lilac bush in her yard, which has been there for as long as I can remember. I have so many fond memories of summers spent at my Grandparents home. When I see them in bloom, they take me back to those good ol’ days.
To this day when I go out to visit my Grams, I often will pick one and bring it in my car just to enjoy the scent. Sometimes I will pick a bouquet to bring home with me and enjoy in my kitchen.
Lilacs don’t have a very long life. Which makes them rare and unique. They bloom once and are finished for the year. I am not even sure if you would be able to order a bouquet from a flower shop in the off-season. So each year that they come back in bloom, I make sure to take the time to appreciate and fully enjoy them.
